The Association of Wisconsin Symphony Orchestras Service to Music Award
Andrew Sewell is currently serving his seventeenth season as Music Director of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. During his tenure, Maestro Sewell has raised the orchestra to greater artistic heights, expanded the repertoire and provided innovative and adventuresome programming to all concerts. His previous appointments include Music Director with the Wichita Symphony from 2000 - 2010, Mansfield Symphony (OH) 1997- 2002, and resident conductor of the Toledo Symphony from 1995 – 2000.
He has worked with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra to collaborate in side-by-side concerts with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra's Concerts on the Square in Madison are a summer focal point and have been televised on Wisconsin Public Television. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra has performed in Spring Green, Portage, Baraboo and other communities in Wisconsin.
Maestro Sewell is in demand as a conductor having led the Toronto, Detroit, Milwaukee, Columbus, Toledo, Syracuse, Illinois, Monterey, Gulf Coast and Eugene Symphony Orchestras, as well as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, Christchurch Symphony, National Symphony of Mexico, Kyushu Symphony (Japan), City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong and Hong Kong City Opera, OK Mozart Festival, Peninsula Music Festival and Masterworks Festival.
A native of New Zealand, Maestro Sewell received his music training on the violin, piano and cornet, and began conducting at age 16. Six years later, he made his professional opera debut with the Mercury Opera and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Winning the Australian Guarantee Corporation’s Young Achiever’s Award allowed him to further his studies abroad. Sewell holds a Master of Music degree with Honors in Conducting from the University of Michigan.
His 2016/17 season engagements include return engagements with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Illinois Symphony, and debut with the San Luis Obispo Symphony (CA). In recent seasons they have also included the Detroit Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia, Gulf Coast Symphony, Portland-Columbia Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Eugene Symphony, Green Bay Symphony, Springfield Symphony (OH), Hong Kong City Opera, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the OK Mozart Festival, Peninsula Music Festival (WI), and Masterworks Festival (IN). He was honored with the 2013 Rabin Arts Youth Award for Individual Achievement by the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, for his services to youth and education. He and his wife, Mary have three grown children and live in Madison.
